On May 12, 2019, the Archdiocese of Sydney opened Sumner House, a vibrant House of Discernment for young men, on the grounds of Saint Joachim Parish in Lidcombe. Once a Marist Brothers Monastery, the property has been transformed into a space for spiritual growth, reflection, and fraternity. With a chapel, communal kitchen, living spaces, offices, and 9 individual bedrooms, Sumner House is a place where young men live, pray, and grow together.
Founded by Archbishop Anthony Fisher OP and Bishop Anthony Randazzo, Sumner House was named after Fr. Bede Sumner, the first priest ordained in Australia. Fittingly, the house was blessed and opened on the anniversary of Fr. Sumner’s ordination — a powerful reminder of the journey each man is invited to explore.

Living at Sumner House is a unique, 12-month experience designed for those who want to seriously discern their vocation as a disciple of Jesus Christ — whether that's priesthood, religious life, or a deeper commitment to Christian life.
You’ll live in a tight-knit Christian community, guided by the House Chaplain, Fr. Bijoy Joseph, where daily prayer, spiritual formation, service, cultural engagement, and household responsibilities shape your everyday rhythm — all while continuing with your work or study.
